Section C Passages

Exercise One

Sometimes, when you want to know someone, you have to do so through an introducer who can introduce two or more people to each other orally. Though it seems simple, there are rules to follow. First of all, the introducer should be polite and decent both in their attitude and behavior.

Secondly, the introducer should make sure that the two sides are willing to know each other before the introduction in order to avoid embarrassment. Therefore, it is necessary to get people’s approvalbeforehand.

1. know

2. simple

3. polite

4. willing

5. approval

Exercise Two

When a person wants to know someone, he often does so through others’ introduction, but in some circumstances, there are no introducers, and then self-introduction, which can be very simple, becomes necessary. You only have to walk up to the one you want to meet, say “Hello!” to him politely, tell him your name and introduce yourself briefly. Then the one you are speaking to will usually react to your introduction in a polite way. Of course, there are formal and informal forms of self-introduction. Which one shall we choose? It depends. If the two have different social status, the formal form should be used.

Questions:

1. How do strangers often get to know each other?

2. When there are no introducers, how do strangers get to know each other?

3. What should you say to the person you want to know at the very beginning?

4. How many forms of self-introduction are there?

5. When should we use the formal form of self-introduction?
